2001 Mercury Cougar Turn On Car Imediatly Starts Rev High Between 2000 2500 Rpm

When I turn on the car it imediatly starts to rev high it goes between 2000 and 2500 rpm and consequently when I shift to drive or reverse it make the car jerk. What should I check, could be a sensor or a vacuum, or a throttle problem?

make sure no vacuum lines are off or broken.

the idle air control motor may be bad if all else is good

is the check engine light on??
