2001 Mercedes Benz Ml430 Oil Light Came On Checked Level Low Went More Under

My oil light came on so I checked level it was low. I went to add more oil and under the cap was what apeared to be dirty butter. I believe that it is the oil foaming. Is this serious and what should I do?
