I had my water pump replaced on a 2001 Mazda Protege at 150k miles. It now has 170k miles and I was told the water pump needs to be replaced again because the pulley has a lot of play to it. Does this seem reasonable or was the first job botched?

If it was replaced with a remaufacturered pump, it is possible. If you hear noise when the engine is running (from that area)the bearing may be bad. Shut the engine and see if there is excessive play in the bearing.
