How do I know if my timing chains need to be replaced in my Lincoln 2001 Cartier Towncar? The car will not start now. I started the engine, but turned it off, b/c it started to sputter. I checked the fuel shut off line and it was on. I tried to start the car again but it would not turn over. The battery was very weak, so I charged the battery and attempted to start the car again, but it would not turn over.

First, are you getting a check engine light? If so, begin by having your computer scanned.

The only way to check the timing chains are to tear down that part of the motor and check them.

The check engine light is not on. Would the car still start if the timing chains needed to be replaced?
