Car started overheated then just stopped it tries to turn over the radiator is backflowing into the reservoir. I changed the thermostat but it still wont start. What is this fail/safe mode and how do I check to see if that is the problem?

That's typical of a severely leaking cylinder head gasket if you're seeing a lot of air bubbles going into the coolant reservoir. To leak that badly the head is usually warped or cracked too and will need more service than just a new gasket. Overhead camshaft heads must be heated and straightened. Push rod heads can be machined to make them perfectly flat.
