2001 Kia Rio stuttering and strange noises

recently, my car has developed a weird stuttering problem and makes a weird vibrating noise when I reverse. it sounds like something is stuck or rubbing, but I cant see anything. when I put it back into drive, the car will go forward a bit, stop hard on its own, then continue forward. I am worried it is the transmission.

UPDATE- I drove it for a little bit today to see if the problem was still there. it feels like the front passenger brake caliper is opening and closing at regular intervals (every 2-3 minutes) while the car is on.
