2001 Jeep Cherokee Hi Will Shift First Second Unless Let Off Gas Does This

Hi. My jeep will not shift from first to second unless I let off the gas. It does this once or twice in the morning, then it is fine until it sits for awhile. then the same problem. I am a mail carrier and it works all day just fine. Until it sits for awhile. any help?
