I turned my car off by mistake yesterday while still in reverse, It will not shift or start now. It is stuck in reverse with the key still in it, it will not give me the key and the battery still works. What could this be? It just kind of jerked when I went to turn it off. Thats when I realized it would not give me my key and it was in reverse not park.

make sure the fuse is good for the brake lights as that operates the shift solenoid.

other than that, you may need a shop to verify the failure.

Try to get the shifter into Park. Lift the lever and wiggle it if if necessary. With shifter in any position other than Park would not allow you to remove the key.

There should be no problem when turning the engine off in other shift positions.
