2001 GMC Sonoma 4WD stopped working

I push the button to shift into 4WD but it doesn't kick in. The light comes on next to the 4WD HI button but its not locked in. I pushed it when I was in park/neutral but the front wheels still have no power. I can fix it myself I just need to know the problem. Wiring issue maybe?

scan for codes and see if encoder motor is working or not it's on tcase and common to fail
