THE CV BOOT IS A RUBBER SHIELD OVER THE "ACTUAL CV JOINT"
THE CV JOINT IS PART OF THE CV AXLE WHICH IS SORTA LIKE A DRIVE-SHAFT TO YOUR WHEEL(S)
THE JOINT ITSELF IS BASICALLY A BEARING(S) THAT ALLOW THE AXLE TO SWIVEL OR MOVE AS THE SUSPENSION MOVES
THE CV JOINT REALLY NEEDS TO STAY AS CLEAN AS IT CAN BE---THAT'S WHY THE "BOOT" IS ON THERE. DIRT AND WATER CAN MAKE THE JOINT PREMATURELY WEAR OUT. THEN THE WHOLE CV AXLE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. AT A SHOP THIS COULD GET EXPENSIVE!
THE RUBBER ACCORDION DEALEES (THE BOOTS) ARE WHAT SPLIT OR TEAR
IF THE JOINTS SEEMS TO BE IN GOOD WORKING ORDER (MAYBE NO TERRIBLE DAMAGE!) YOU MAY BE ABLE TO REPLACE THE BOOT ONLY (NOT THE WHOLE AXLE) WITH AN AFTER-MARKET "SPLIT BOOT". SEEN IN BELOW LINK
THE NEIGHBOR KID WHO IS IN HIGH SCHOOL AUTO MECHANICS SHOP COULD PERFORM THIS TASK IN AN HOUR. IN YOUR CARPORT. WITH MINIMAL TOOLS!
DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU OWE ME LUNCH NOW! LOL!
LEMME KNOW WHAT YOUR PLANS ARE---I CAN RECOMMEND OPTIONS OTHER THAN THE STEALERSHIP AND THE "BIG EXPENSIVE SHOPS". SHOULD YOUR NEIGHBOR KID BE GETTING BAD GRADES AT SCHOOL IN AUTO MECHANICS SHOP
