I was driving my car in traffic this afternoon, going approximately 15-20mph, and a loud screeching noise occurred. Then my car started hiccuping and stalled. I saw that the battery light came on and I thought that my alternator was going out. I didn't think this was the case since I just replaced that and the battery about six months ago. So I assumed it was the belt. My car started right back up and I made it all the way home with no more noise. When I got home I looked at the belt and didn't notice any immediate cracks nor did it seem loose. Any other possibilities?

MAYBE THE A/C COMPRESSOR LOCKED UP?

IF IT'S NOT ON NOW, THEN THE A/C CLUTCH PULLEY IS TURNING FREELY (LIKE IT'S SUPPOSED TO) IF YOU TURN THE A/C "ON", AND IT'S LOCKED, THE A/C CLUTCH WILL LOCK ONTO IT, THEN THINGS CANNOT TURN FREELY.

YOU COULD REMOVE THE BELT AND SEE IF ALL OF THE PULLEYS SPIN FREE, NO WOBBLE (IDLE AND TENSIONERS PULLEYS SEEM TO GO BEFORE OTHER STUFF

'COURSE "GARFIELD" MIGHT HAVE WENT FOR A SPIN IN THE BELT TOO! ANY FUR UNDER THE HOOD?

So I took it to one mechanic and explained to them what you and I thought it was. They took about a day to come back to me and told me it was the torque converter. They suggested that since that was bad that I should swap out my tranny as well. They guy was kind of rude. He kept asking me what was more important to me, having a car that runs or having a/c that worked. I really didn't know what he met. I asked him if fixing the tranny would get rid of the noise but he just kept referring to that comment. So, I decided to take my car back and get a second opinion somewhere else. I explained to them the same thing and what the other guys told me. They said usually a torque converters don't make noises like that. Fortunately, the new mechanic I took it too was actually a tranny specialist. Anyhow, he checked it and told me it was the Cam Synchronizer. So, I'm hoping that's all that it was since it is a significant difference in repairs and costs. Thanks for your help!!!! It allowed me to go there sounding like I knew a little bit about what I was talking about.
