I have black smoke from my exhaust pipes

hi my mondeo 1998cc TDCi is giving some black smoke from exhaust also there is a little (what feels like a fuel blockage ) when in second/third gear just when im at top off revs for that gear, any thoughts on what this could be, I've just bought the car this week and theres no service history, could it be just needing a good service , thanks CL

It sounds like oil is getting into the cylinders and causing it to misfire and loose power. It does not have to make a back fire kind of noise to not fire as the oil will keep the spark plug from sparking and then the cylinders that do work, burn the oil and that is the black smoke coming out of the exhasut.
Genrally when this happens, either the valve seals are bad, the oil is getting past the piston rings or the head gasket is bad.
