the brake lights only work if you hit the brake pedal hard

I have a ford galaxy 2001 2.3 16v - A few times what would be the problem If i hit the brake pedal hard and fast it comes on and their is a clicking sound coming from the compartment where the brake lights are.

Most likely to be a brake switch fault. Check the switch at pedal bracket.
