Catalytic converter

I had read you can "turn off" the catalytic converter. Is that true? I have a 2001 ford f150 5.4L. About 2 years ago had a flowmaster excaust installed. Is this something that can be done? Or do you have to take the whole thing off?

No, it is not and would be illegal

That's not something that can be "turned off", and it's illegal to remove it. Since the 1996 models, the catalytic converter's efficiency is monitored while driving. If it isn't working properly, the Check Engine light will turn on and a fault code will be stored in memory. Once that code is set, some other codes will not be detected so a running problem could develop and there will be no clue as to the cause. Also, even if another code is set, you'll never know because the light will already be on.

The converters today are very effective and free-flowing so there is no reason to remove them.
