Overdrive is automatically on

Every time i start my 2001 Explorer Sport, overdrive is automatically on. I have to shut it off manually. Could there be a problem with the wiring. Also, rumor has it that overdrive can improve mpg, is this true?

I believe it should come on when you first start the vehicle. Also, yes it will help with MPG.
