2001 Ford Explorer ???

The battery gauge is reading as high as possible, the overdrive indicator is showing that it's off and it won't switch on, when I put it in reverse it dies. When it is idling it revs up and down. I have no clue what would cause this. I unhooked the battery and waited 15 minutes then reconnected it but it did the same thing

If the Alt gauge is pegged, the alternator is overcharging and could cause serious damage to the electrical system. This is most likely the result of a faulty voltage regulator. I need you to try something for me. All you will need is a multi meter (volt gauge).

Follow these directions and let me know what you find. NOTE: Do Not run the vehicle other than to do the test. If it is overcharging as you described, it could cause a fire.

I would say to check the voltage regulator on your alternator.
