2001 Ford ZX2

We have a 2001 Ford Escort ZX2, it runs great however it will not go into gear. The Transmission fluid is fine, the engine bogs down some like it wants to go into drive but won't. We checked the gear shifter and it is fine. We found a sensor that seems to be connected to transmission but it is a $300. Part, anyone have suggestions on whatelse to check?

Do not spend the 300.00. Need to have it looked at by an experienced tech. Beware though, I do not trust trans shops when it comes to price and diagnostics. It's never a simple repair it is always " oh yeah the trans will have to be rebuilt" they replace only a part and charge you the whole repair. Make sure you tell them you want all old parts if you go that route. Or buy a used trans 250.00-400.00 and have it installed. I just went through the same thing, only a 5 spd manual
