my van has started skipping when pulling out

its a 75 diesel van idles seems too be ok does take a few cranks too get it started but relly doesnt seem too have a lot of power and is really juddery at junctions when pulling out
could the brakes be binding as it feels like the front wheels are skipping
there is a slow whine from the rear end when slowing down the van is front wheel drive

Without any proper diagnostics it is not possible to know what is causing the lack of power and I would suggest starting with checking the fuel supply. The fuel filter might require replacement.

The whine from rear could be a failing wheel bearing and you need to have it checked.

turns out the rer near side drum was so badly rusted had too sand the rust down on one side as it was dragging on that its a lot better after that and reverses without trying to throw me outta the seat still a tad jittery but no where near as bad as be fore

how do you test the brake cylinders for working as front facing pad nearly new looking rear facing pad is half worn

You need to remove the drums and push the shoes against the cylinder one way and reverse to see if they are stuck.

a lot of banging from that wheel that gets louder and faster with speed would that be the shoes catching

Banging are usually not caused by the shoes. Did you check the lug nut torque and wheel bearings for excessive side movements?

no excessive movement on the wheel at all but rotates smoothley then stops and is stiff too move but spins ok after that till it stops again

Seems the rear brake cylinders are stuck and the drums are out of round.

Front could have similar problems with sticking brake calipers and bad rotors.

looks like a weekend strip down and flush then
can the cylinders be released or are they a change job

You would need to replace the cylinders. In this case bleeding is not going to help. You need to have the problem rectified and then bleed the system.
