2001 ford escape

2001 FORD ESCAPE

I have a 2001 ford escape, V6 column shift auto. When you shift into D or 1 nothing happens for a short period then it klunks suddenly into gear. Afterwards all drives as normal. Do you think the shift cable requires adjustment or do i have a more seriouse problem?

If the tranny fluid and level are okay-Bring it in and have it further checked by a transmission specialist sounds internal to me-might try having it pressure tested to find out more-
