leak by thermostat housing

My car isnt overheating but smoking ALOT. What is the thermostat housing connected to on a 2001 Ford Crown Vic? WHatever it is, its black and and a big crack in it. Is it the engine block or the intake manifold?

You probably have the original intake manifold on the car. They were bad about cracking. There is an updated intake that has an aluminum crossover that cures the problem. Search Dorman products for an intake for your car.
