Hello, I own a 2001 Dodge Intrepid with the infamous 2.7litre engine but mine has 150,000 miles on it, yeah!!! I started it this morning and it started knocking. I thought it was because it hadn't been run in a few days but the noise remained after warm up. I put in Lucas Oil stabilizer and it stopped for a few seconds but returned. The noise is on the passenger side top just under the valve cover (at least it's very clear there). I haven't noticed a loss in power although I did park it pretty quickly. I really want to squeeze a few more miles out of it. Does it sound like a lifter problem?
It is a knock and not a tick like a injector.

the timing chain is loose and slapping around.... getting 150k out of this engine, consider yourself lucky!

Thank you very much for the reply. It just doesn't seem like a timing chain. I was actually going to pull the valve cover off and decided to start it again. It knocked for about a second or 2 but then smoothed out and stopped. Now it only knocks when it first starts for a couple seconds and stops. Maybe the Lucas oil worked. I guess no more long trips in this car!

there could also be some sludge built up in the engine... that engine has hydraulic tensioners in it, and without adequate oil pressure will knock for a second or 2 after started... try having an oil flush done...
