Hi, my mother's van has the check engine light on and the gas gauge messes up sometimes. It'll be on 1/4 of a tank one minute, then 1/2 the next. It doesn't do this frequently, just occasionally. Could these problems coincide? Any thoughts?

When the Check Engine light is on, there's a diagnostic fault code related to the problem. Chrysler makes reading them yourself real easy. Cycle the ignition switch from "off" to "run" three times within five seconds, leave it in "run", then watch the numbers show up in the odometer display.

The fuel gauge sending unit has a weak connection on the wiper. You have to remove the tank to remove the pump assembly, then the float arm can be unclipped, the wiper is bent to increase the tension, then it's all reinstalled.
