if an axel in the front went out would it make a grinding noise and cause it to not go in to gear?

Depends on how it failed. If the $3.00 spring broke inside the inner cv joint, the housing could pop out of the transmission and the van would not move. It would still be going into gear. The splines might make a grinding noise if they're rubbing on the gear inside the transmission. Someone is going to have to look underneath at it. If the joint popped out there will be a puddle of red transmission fluid under it.
