what would cause loss of breaks and loss of power

driving down the road had no breaks and lost power.

Lost power? Engine power? Did it shut off?

Loss of brakes can be loss of vacuum, but the brakes would still function. It would just be more difficult to actuate them. Total loss is either a bad master cylinder, or major fluid leak.
