The fuel light come on and the gauge drops to empty

2001 chev suburban, fuel light comes on when tank is full and the gauge drops to empty. The truck runs fine otherwise

The sending unit in the fuel tank sounds bad. It is part of the fuel pump. They are replaced as a unit.
