can i or how do i replace oil pump on a 2001 silverado 4x4 or how much should it cost to have someone do it

the sensor was changed and the pick up tube and the o ring the pan had metal shavings and gunk in it it still has the tapping noise coming from the engine my mechanic said it was a big job to replace the oil pump.he didn't want to tackle it because it would be expensive hope you can help lorene
