Just got a new re manufactured engine for my chevy s-10. Had it installed and it is making a tapping noise on top of the engine and has black smoke coming from the exhaust. Truck seems to idle ruff also

The black smoke indicates that the air fuel mixture is too rich (too much gas to the engine). The ticking has me concerned. Is it loud? Is it a tick or knock? Are you certain it is coming from the engine and not a belt driven accessory or possible exhaust leak (which can sound like a ticking)? Also, is the check engine light on?

It on top of the engine (the knocking sound) it loud enough to be heard. It Goes away for a little bit when you give it some gas but after you let off the pedal and it settles down the knocking noise comes back and idles rough. The Check engine light is not on

Is oil pressure where it should be at an idle? As far as the black smoke, have you checked fuel pump pressure to make sure it isn't too high? Also, the coolant temp sensor can cause the engine to run too rich also.
