a/c compressor turns on and then off

I have a 2001 chev s10 v6. the a/c compressor turns on for just seconds and then off for about 30 seconds then back on. wont stay on long enough to cool the compartment. coolant and pressure are correct. is there a relay to the compressor?

New hoses, pressure is fine, coolant is at proper level. compressor comes on for less than ten seconds then turns off for 30 seconds then on again for less than 10 seconds. the compressor doesn't stay on long enough to cool the cab.
