car won't shift into park and hood won't open

2001 Monte Carlo won't shift into park and hood will not open to disconnect battery. Can't figure out why hood won't open, I don't see how they could be related. Shifter never gave any problems until now.

I don't think they are related. First, the hood release is through a cable. Make sure it hasn't broken where it attaches to the release. Next, the park lock solenoid is actuated by power from the brake light switch. Check to make sure the brake lights are working. If they aren't, check the switch under the dash at the top of the brake pedal for adjustment and if it is working.
