My husband was driving our car and it just died while driving. When it was parked all the water leaked out and after it was parked it overheated. What would cause this? Someone mention that maybe it is the freeze cap or freeze plug.

You need to fill the cooling system and then pressure test it for leaks. If you severely overheated it, you may have done serious internal damage in addition to the original cooling system problem.
