2001 Chevrolet Impala car overheated

Car was turned off. When I turned the car back on the car overheated & spilled antifreeze everywhere. My husband filled it back up w coolant &drove it home. After we got it home it would no longer overheat. We recently replaced the thermostat, could it be a bad thermostat?

The only way that would cause it to overflow was if it blew a hose off or caused the cap to fall off. Also the reservoir could have overflowed. If it does not leak anymore than that could have been the problem. Where was it leaking form?
