my cavalier was hook up to a diagnostic and it read not hooked up, why want it read? why is my car knocking and backfiring and turning off when i start it.

Was the scanner a top quality unit, most cheap scanners are just that, cheap and so much rubbish, you will have to try a good scanner and get the codes extracted.
