I am going to purchase LED bulbs for a 2001 Cavalier for the tail light and reverse light and I would like to know if I should look for a specific socket type for example T20 or T25?

Pull an old one out and look at it. That's the best way to match it up. Be aware that on some cars that use a "lamp outage" module, LED bulbs might not draw enough current to tell the module they're working. That could trigger a warning light on the dash.
