I recently did an oil change on my 2001 Chevy Astro. Instead of using the manufacturer recommended oil, I used 10W 40. According to the owners manual this will cause engine damage. If this is true what type of engine damage could result from using an oil not recommended by the manufacturer.

No engine damage will occur. The weights are so similar there's not much difference. If you're in extreme cold, a thiner oil is good, in extreme heat thicker is better. But 10W40 is a middle ground that'll be good in both.
