The Check Engine light turned on indicating the Engine Computer detected a problem and set a diagnostic fault code in memory. That can happen in response to a serious malfunction or it can have a really simple cause such as a vacuum hose knocked loose or an electrical connector loose or not plugged in.
Any mechanic knows the place to start is by reading those fault codes. They don't say to replace parts; they only indicate the circuit or system that has the problem and needs further diagnosis. To erase those codes, ("turn the light off") requires reading them. They should have done that and that would have given them an idea where to look.
