Looking at a 2001 bmw 330ci 147k on it and a 2003 325i 144k on it. Is one car better than the other for reliability?

No difference. Usually you'd want a car with less miles, but that's not always a good indicator of the vehicles health. One owner could've taken better care of his car.
If you can establish/verify a cars history, and it turns out good, go with that one

The four door is probably the one to look at, coupes are sometimes problematic.
