just purchased 2001 bmw 325i with 58000 miles was leaving for work this morning found the car would only reverse. it went into drive but would not go forward. i shut car off for a few min then tried again it drives now but is very sluggish. is this common problem? what could the problem be? is it serious?

It could be an indicator of an internal transmission issue. I recommend scheduling an appointment with your BMW service provider straightaway.
