new bulb, fuse is good, but no driver side reverse light. no power to socket and nothing to plug at the socket.

If you only have one working, you will have to use a test light and check down the loom from the faulty light, proberbly a corroded terminal check right behind the light first and if no power there look for the loom plug and test there.

well at the connector there is no power so following the wire it disappears into the bundle heading away from the trunk towards the fuse panel I assume?

Yes. You will have to unwrap that bundle. Buy some electrical tape or wire wrap so you can wrap it back up when finished.
