I BOUGHT A 2000 VOLVO S80 THAT NEEDED STRUTS, THE TOP OF THE STRUT TOWERS FROM INSIDE THE HOOD HAD A NOTABLE SPACE FROM UPPER NUT TO THE STRUT MOUNT, ABOUT 1/4''. FOUND OUT THE STRUT MOUNTS WERE BAD. I PUT NEW STRUTS, NEW STRUT MOUNTS AND NEW STRUT MOUNT BUSHINGS THAT HOLD DOWN THE SPRINGS. LOWERED THE CAR AND THE STRUT TOP NUT STILL LIFTS UP. I PUT EVERYTHING BACK PERFECT, AS I HAVE DONE ABOUT 6 STRUT CHANGES ON VARIOUS CARS IN PAST YRS. MY FIRST ON A VOLVO. ALL THE PARTS I MADE SURE WERE THE SAME. CAN YOU HELP. THANKS DON SQUIRES

That gap maybe normal. Can you post an image on here? The 21mm nut holds down a cover which covers up the actual nut that looks like a cross which holds the spring seat in place. When the spring seat separates it causes the cross nut to sink down and makes a thumping sound when going over bumps. Hope this helps.
