Car was overheating decided to change thermostat, timing belt had to be removed, I was being careless and didn't mark where they should have stayed and now I'm sure its out of time and need to know where it should be and how to put it back in time so I do not bend a valve.

I have attached the cam marks and the cam holding tool pic. The crank will need to be at TDC. Please keep in mind, this process requires special tooling.

As long as you follow the diagram, you should be fine. Don't worry about the donation. I just hope I can help.

At tdc piston 3 should be up? It says in book. Also if the left camshaft was turned more than the right does that affect anything?

Cams must be aligned. They make a tool that holds the cams in place.

If it runs good, you nailed it. Even one tooth off will make it run poorly, if at all. Good job.
Let me know if you need help in the future.

Joe, I sent his comment about the cams not being aligned. If camshaft holder tool isn't installed and cam timing gets thrown off, what should I do to put or get the can timing back to top dead center?

Hi,
Is the vehicle a 2000 Passat V6? Also, let me know exactly what you need to do. If you plan to time the engine, you will the alignment tool.
