my 2000 passat is making a squeaking rattely sound from the belt area

its. like a belt is loose or pullies are loose it had a light hot metal smell comming from that area. when i notest the sound the check engine light came on. what do u thank the problem could be.im working in a little town two hours from home with no repair shop

It sound like a belt driven accessory is failing, the check engine light is the variable. If it is the alternator, the light may come on due to a low voltage. It sounds like you may be unable, but if you could remove the belt and start the vehicle, see if the noise is still present. If it is not, spin one pulley at a time, to try and isolate the cause.
