I have a 2000 vw jetta, and the trunk will not open I have only a valet key. The switch just blinks when I try to open it. There is a black box with 2 wire harness plugged into it that makes a clicking sound but I cant figure out what part it is. When I unplug the harness the interior lights dont work. Can this be bad or blown?

That black box is the "Comfort Control Module"

Common issues with trunk not opening:
- electric motor no good
- wiring to the motor broken (at left trunk hinge)

Thomas

From a VW Service Manual:

The Comfort System Central Control Module performs the following
tasks in the vehicle:
? Sunroof control (issues enabling)
? Window regulator control (issues enabling)
? Central locking system control
? Anti-theft warning system control, refer to
? “3.1 Anti-Theft Alarm System, Checking Alarm Sources“,
page 154
? Radio receiver
? Rear lid closing
? Comfort operation

You can get the trunk open by folding the rear seats forward, crawl
into the trunk and remove the panel on the inside of the lid. Then
move the linkage manually to open the trunk.

Once the trunk is open, you can diagnose the actual cause. No power
or ground to motor or a bad motor.

It might be your comfortsystem central control module. Make sure to check fuses for being blown first underhood as well as inside car.
