2000 Toyota Other engine check

my ipsum model 2000 takes long to change gears until it shows " engine check" then it begins changing normally. what could be the major problem and what do i need to change?
- what do you advise me to do? should i continue driving it or park it?

Your vehicle is equipped with a OBD2 computer system. Since your check engine light is coming on, that indicates a trouble code is stored in the system. Most likely the code is going to be related to the transmission issues. So, what you need to do is have the computer scanned for trouble codes. The codes will indicate what is causing the problem.

Now, if you live in the USA and not in CA, most parts stores will scan it for free. Have that done and let me know what you find.
