My parents' car, a 2000 Echo, has started making a faint, high-pitched "whining" noise whenever the car starts or accelerates. Any ideas on what it could be?

Noise problems are something we can't help much unless you are able to provide us information as to what is causing it and when it occurs, and relations to it.

If noise is present when engine is started and related to engine speed, that usually comes from the drive belt area. Alternators, A/C compressor, idle pullys and power steering pumps are some of the possible causes.
