2000 Pontiac Grand Prix High idling

Lately my car has been high idling and the brakes barely stop me. The rpms will go up to 3 without me stepping on the gas and my whole car shakes. This problem usually is worse or occurs most often after I : A) leave the car running for more then a few minutes B) in stop and go traffic C) or if I run errands and only have the car stopped for a few minutes. What could this be caused by?

Sounds like either the vacuum on the brake booster or the brake booster itself is bad.

Just to add to this one you can check to see if the brake booster is holding vacuum or leaking by using a vacuum hand pump pulling a vacuum on the booster and watching the gauge for a drop.
