The gas gauge hasn't worked accurately for a couple years. We would put gas in when the "checkgauges" light would come on cause that was a tell tell sign. Recently that method stopped working and we ran out of gas a few times (kept a gallon can in trunk) yesterday after traveling about 150 miles it ran outta gas again but would not start after putting the gallon of gas in. If you held the pedal down it would sputter, start n die. We let it sit for an hour or two then it started fine, even idled. Today when we went to take it for a short drive it did same thing. After sitting awhile it started fine but after driving several blocks it sputtered ndied. Now it won't start, tries to but just very rough/missing sounding and smells weird almost like sulfer. Not sure ifthis is a sign of fuel components or cat. Convertor. Any advice is much appreciated

A gallon of fuel is not going to get you too much driving. Try filling in more gas.
The gauge not working is most probably due to a failed sending unit. The low fuwl warning indicator light has failed too so you would need to remove the sending unit/warning sensor to check/test/replace.

Well we tried putting more gas in and it ran normal for about 10min then sputtered, died and we pushed it home. I'm leaning towards the fuel pump is shot, or
Could it be some kind of sensor?

It could be either of those you have mentioned.

After it stalled, if you can't restart it, you need to check what is missing, fuel or ignition sparks. If it is fuel, it could be a bad fuel pump or the wiring, which could be the likely cause since the low fuel indicator failed suddenly.

It could also be due to a bad fuel pump relay.

Ok we hooked it up to a code reader and it says "code 420 catalyst efficiency below threshold (bank 1)"
So would that make the problem the cat converter or what do you think?
Thanks again for your help

Under normal circumstances this code should not cause any problems but if the catalytic converter is clogged, it would. You need to remove the catalytic converter to check for clogging.
