My Opel Astra 1.4litre petrol 16 valve is not starti.On turning on ignition not a single sound is audible,but when I get a small push 2-3 yards engine gets in motion and drives off.

Your battery is weak. Have it tested.
another possibility is that the battery cables are corroded and need to be cleaned (this makes a bad connection and limits the amount of power which reaches the starter).
