The things you want to look for first is a coolant leak of some kind. The likely things that cause over heating is a bad water pump, thermostat, or bad radiator cap, which is not holding pressure from the radiator anymore. All those things are possibilities of what the problem could be coming from.

Make sure the coolant is full. If it is, remove the thermostat and check it (directions on our homepage under the DIY section). If it is good, flush the entire cooling system. If the problem continues, have the system pressure tested as well as the radiator cap. Check for leaks.
