The motor in this car has strated to surge and die. The car stalls frequently in drive. It is blowing black smoke with a very strong fuel odour. Is the problem likely to be O2 sensors or catalytic converter. As a bit more bakckground the car was run for some months with a faulty coil

Probable causes of an engine running rich are as follows:

1.Excessive fuel pressure can be cause by restricted fuel return line
2.Defective Oxygen Sensors.
3.Leaking injectors and fuel pressure regulator.
4.Coolant temperature sensor out of calibration.
5.Restricted air intake system.
