I'd like to know what & how much to repair?

I'm unable to shift from "park" into drive gears. This occurred when I bought the car new and the warranty covered it. RA told me how to bypass or use the release lever, and this is difficult and unreliable. What is broken and how much for repair?

why not just ask dealer? fairly common problem. they even have a record of what they did last time.

Thank you for taking time to reply. They've told me it can be one of several things vs. my mechanic (away for weekend) who 95% of the time is able to pinpoint the problem.
